There’s no one-size-fits-all way to buy Kemet parts

If you’ve ever tried to order a few hundred Kemet capacitors for a prototype run, you know the feeling: some suppliers treat you like a nuisance, others bend over backward. And the advice you get online? It’s usually written for procurement managers ordering 100,000 pieces, not for someone like me who manages orders for a 50-person R&D team.

I’m an office administrator at a mid-size electronics firm. I handle about 60–80 purchase orders a year across 8–10 vendors. In 2024, I consolidated our component orders for 400 employees across 3 locations. So when I say there’s no single answer for “how to buy Kemet,” I mean it — because your situation changes everything.

Three common buying scenarios

After 5 years of managing these relationships, I’ve learned that most buyers fall into one of three camps. Here’s what works for each.

Scenario A: Engineering samples / evaluation (1–50 pieces)

You’re testing a new design. Maybe you need the Kemet T495 series tantalum capacitor — a popular surface-mount part — or a few thermistors from the “top therm” line. You need exactly 10 pieces of 5 different values. No distributor wants to split a reel for that.

What I do: Go straight to the big catalog distributors like Digi-Key or Mouser. They carry Kemet and break reels for a small fee (usually $0.50–1.00 per cut). Yes, the unit price is higher — maybe 3x the reel price — but you avoid the hassle. I learned this the hard way: in 2022, I called Kemet’s Fort Lauderdale office directly asking for samples. They politely directed me to their authorized distributors, and I wasted a whole morning.

One trick: Kemet’s website (kemet.com) has a “sample request” button for some parts, but it’s only for qualified engineers with company email. As an admin buyer, I found it faster to just order from a distributor.

Here’s a contrast insight that changed my mind: When I compared two orders side by side — one from a distributor who charges a small cut fee, and one from a “cheap” surplus seller who sold me a whole reel of T495s — the cheap one cost me $80 more because I couldn’t use 90% of the parts. Now I stick with the cut-fee approach.

Scenario B: Small-batch prototypes / short runs (100–1,000 pieces)

Now you’re building 20 test boards. You need 500 pieces of a specific Kemet MLCC or tantalum capacitor. Minimum order quantities (MOQs) start to hurt. Some distributors won’t touch orders under $100.

What I do: Look for distributors that explicitly say “no minimum order” or “small quantity friendly.” Arrow Electronics and Newark (an Avnet company) are decent for Kemet parts under 1,000 pieces. I also check Kemet’s own list of authorized distributors — they have a tool on their site. But here’s the thing: even authorized distributors sometimes give you a cold shoulder if you’re small. That’s where the small_friendly attitude matters.

I only believed in the power of persistence after ignoring my own rule. Last year, I placed a $350 order with a distributor who said they “prefer larger orders.” They shipped 2 weeks late, and my VP asked why the prototype was delayed. Scenario C: Production quantities (2,000+)

You finally got the design approved. Now you need 5,000 Kemet T495 capacitors each month. Congrats — you’re now a “real” customer. You can negotiate directly with Kemet’s sales team (based in Fort Lauderdale, but also with regional offices).

What I do: Contact Kemet’s distribution channel manager first. They can assign you a preferred distributor who will stock parts for you. The price drops significantly — maybe 20–30% below distributor pricing. But here’s the catch: you need a forecast. They won’t believe you if you just say “I need 5,000.” Show them your purchase history or a signed contract.

People think expensive vendors deliver better quality. Actually, vendors who deliver quality can charge more. The causation runs the other way. With Kemet, you’re already paying for reliability — so don’t let a distributor talk you into a cheaper generic that may fail.

How to figure out which scenario you’re in

Here’s a quick checklist I use when I start sourcing a new Kemet part:

  • Quantity: Under 50? Go to Digi-Key/Mouser. 100–1,000? Check Arrow/Newark for MOQ. Over 2,000? Call Kemet direct.
  • Urgency: Need it next week? Use a distributor with local stock (check Fort Lauderdale warehouse for Kemet — they have a large inventory there).
  • Part type: Is it a standard MLCC or a specialty T495 tantalum? Specialty parts often have longer lead times, so plan ahead.
  • Your company size: A 50-person company gets treated differently than a Fortune 500. Be honest with yourself. If you’re small, use a small-friendly distributor; don’t waste time trying to get factory pricing.

Take it from someone who once tried to negotiate a $700 order with Kemet’s Fort Lauderdale sales office: they politely told me to work through a distributor. And you know what? They were right. The distributor added value (cutting reels, providing test data). I just had to find the right one.

One last thing about “top therm”

If you’re looking for Kemet thermistors (sometimes called “top therm” in old catalogs), they’re still available but often rebranded under the “Kemet” name since the acquisition of Therm-O-Disc. You’ll find them as NTC or PTC thermistors. Most distributors stock them. Just don’t expect the same MOQ as capacitors — thermistors often come in tape-and-reel with 3,000 minimum. So if you only need 100, prepare for a cut fee.

Prices as of January 2025 (verified on distributor websites): a typical Kemet T495 100µF 10V tantalum cap costs about $0.80–1.20 each in quantities of 100, and $0.50–0.70 in quantities of 1,000. Thermistors vary widely but expect $0.15–0.40 each. Always check current pricing.

Small doesn’t mean unimportant — it means potential. The vendors who treated my $200 orders seriously are the ones I still use for $20,000 orders. Kemet itself may not love small orders directly, but their distributor network exists exactly for that reason. Use it wisely.
