Kemet Corporation FAQ: Kemet Mexico, Multimeter, Flip Phone, and Kemet vs Crown Castle

I am a quality compliance manager at a mid-size electronics manufacturer. I review incoming component lots before they go to production—roughly 200 line items a year. In the last three years, I have rejected about 6% of first deliveries, mostly for documentation or traceability issues rather than electrical failure. Here are the Kemet questions I hear from engineers and procurement teams.

What does Kemet Corporation actually do?

Kemet Corporation designs and manufactures passive electronic components: ceramic capacitors, tantalum capacitors, relays, and connectors. You will find Kemet parts in automotive ECUs, industrial power supplies, aerospace avionics, and telecom equipment. The company has a long history in tantalum capacitors—that is the product family where Kemet is most likely to appear on an approved vendor list.

Since 2020, Kemet is part of the Yageo group. The Kemet brand still exists, but ownership changed, so some long-time buyers talk about 'legacy Kemet' parts. From a quality perspective, the legal structure matters less than the datasheet revision and lot traceability. That is the part I actually review.

Is Kemet Mexico an important manufacturing site?

Yes, for certain product lines. You will see 'Kemet Mexico' on country-of-origin labels for some ceramic and tantalum capacitor series. The Mexico operation is part of Kemet's global supply chain, and it is not just a packaging center—real component fabrication happens there.

My caveat: my experience is based on the specific series we have sourced from Mexico over the past three years. I cannot speak to every factory or every product family. If you are qualifying a component, look at the factory code on the label. The same part number can be assembled in more than one location, and not every location has the same test coverage. That might sound obvious, but I have seen engineers miss it until the lot codes come back mixed.

Does Kemet make multimeters or test equipment?

No. Kemet makes components, not test instruments. A multimeter is a measurement tool, and Kemet does not sell one under that name. I think the search term 'Kemet multimeter' comes from a misspelling or from someone looking for a replacement capacitor to repair a meter.

If you are repairing a multimeter and it needs a ceramic or tantalum capacitor, you do not search by brand. You read the marking on the old part, find its capacitance, voltage rating, dielectric type, and package size, then cross-reference to a compatible part—Kemet if the spec matches. That is how we do it in incoming inspection. The component has to match the circuit, not the brand name.

Are Kemet capacitors still used in flip phones?

They can be, but let me split that into two scenarios. A modern flip phone is essentially a small smartphone without a touchscreen. It uses current-generation passive components, and a Kemet ceramic or tantalum capacitor could easily be in the BOM. So yes, Kemet parts appear in flip phones that are being made today.

An original 2000s flip phone is different. The parts in it are mostly obsolete. In one repair project, I needed a 22 µF tantalum capacitor for an old RF board. The closest cross was a Kemet polymer tantalum part with a similar footprint but better ESR. Electrically it worked, and the lower ESR should have been fine. But I let my gut say 'better than original' and skipped the board layout check. The rework cracked a pad. That was a $200 mistake. The lesson: a compatible part is not automatically a drop-in replacement.

Kemet vs Crown Castle: which is better?

This is a confusing search, and I get why. Both are company names, so someone typed 'Kemet vs Crown Castle' expecting a comparison. But they are in different businesses. Kemet manufactures electronic components. Crown Castle owns and operates wireless infrastructure—cell towers, small cells, and fiber. One is a component supplier; the other is a network infrastructure operator.

If you are comparing infrastructure providers, Crown Castle is comparable to American Tower or SBA Communications. If you are comparing passive component manufacturers, Kemet is comparable to Murata, TDK, AVX, or Vishay. Saying 'Kemet vs Crown Castle' is like comparing a lumber supplier to a bridge builder. That is not a dodge—it is a boundary. The useful first step in any vendor evaluation is making sure you are actually comparing alternatives that serve the same function.

How do I check if a Kemet component is genuine?

This is the question I care about most. Counterfeit passive components are a real problem, and Kemet's reputation makes it a target. Here is what I look at on every lot.

  • The complete part number. Kemet part numbers contain a lot of information: capacitance, voltage, tolerance, dielectric, and packaging. One character off and you have a different component. I have rejected deliveries where the marking on the part did not match the certificate of conformance.
  • The date and lot codes. Reels from the same factory should have consistent code structures. Mixed or missing codes are a red flag. In 2024, I rejected a first delivery because the lot traceability paperwork did not align with the codes on the actual reels. The vendor redid it at their cost.
  • The supply chain. Buy from an authorized distributor. If a deal is significantly below market price, you are not saving money—you are buying a liability. I have seen beautiful counterfeit packaging with wrong internal markings. No traceability, no acceptance.

The bigger surprise is usually how good counterfeit packaging looks. The labels are often the last thing to give the part away; the internal markings and traceability fall apart under magnification. I also verify the RoHS and REACH declarations for every part that goes into our products. A single non-compliant substance can shut down a production line, and the supplier won't be the one explaining it to your customer.

Is Kemet a reliable capacitor brand?

In my opinion, Kemet is generally reliable for applications where its product families fit. Their tantalum lines are well documented, and their datasheets are detailed enough for a solid design review. I have also seen Kemet parts used in automotive and industrial designs that require AEC-Q200 or equivalent qualification. Those qualifications do not guarantee a part will never fail, but they raise the confidence level.

That said, 'reliable' is a broad word. My experience is based on roughly 200 incoming lots per year across the last three years. If you are dealing with a niche series, an older product family, or a different market segment, your experience might differ. I have also seen Kemet components with long lead times. Quality and availability are two separate questions.

One more thing: as of early 2025, Kemet is still part of the Yageo group, and product lines are evolving. Verify current datasheets, PCNs, and delivery schedules before locking in a part number. That advice applies to Kemet, Murata, TDK, or any other supplier.
