If your next project specifies Kemet ceramic capacitors or a Kemet DuraForce Pro 2 capacitor, buy them from an authorized Kemet distributor. That is not a soft preference. It is the first thing I check when a new part number hits my inspection table. Over the last four years, I have rejected about 6% of first deliveries from non-authorized and gray-market sources because the lot traceability or documentation did not match the order. The cost of those rejections—and the rework that followed—was far higher than the price difference we were trying to save.
So here is the short version: a genuine Kemet part from an authorized distributor is a spec decision, not just a cost decision. You can still save money on the quote, but calculate total cost of ownership, not unit price.
Why I start with the distributor, not the part number
I work as a quality and compliance manager for a mid-sized electronics assembly company. I review every incoming component batch before it goes into production—roughly 200 unique part numbers a year. My team checks the drawing, the manufacturer datasheet, the date code, the country of origin, and whether the part matches the customer's approved source list.
In Q1 2024, we rejected two capacitor lots that looked fine on the surface but had no verifiable manufacturer lot code. The vendor argued that they were 'within industry standard' and that we should accept them. We didn't. Had we accepted them, the failures would have shown up somewhere else—maybe in the field, after a customer had paid us.
The most frustrating part of this job isn't finding bad parts. It's finding good parts with bad paperwork. The solution is to avoid breaking the supply chain in the first place.

Kemet ceramic capacitors remain one of the most popular passive component families for engineers. But the term covers a lot: C0G/NP0, X7R, X5R, high voltage, automotive-grade AEC-Q200, different case sizes, and different termination finishes. 'Kemet 0805 100nF' is not a complete spec.
On a recent 50,000-unit order for a customer's sensor board, the standard X7R part and the automotive-grade X7R part looked nearly identical. The only difference was the last few characters of the Kemet part number. The authorized distributor caught the mismatch before we placed the order. If we had gone with the cheaper alternate, the PCB assembly might still have worked. But the end customer's requirements did not allow it, and we would have shipped a non-compliant product.
When I specify Kemet ceramic capacitors, I ask for the full manufacturer part number, not a distributor's internal cross-reference. Then I check it against the current Kemet datasheet (as of January 2025, at least).
DuraForce Pro 2 and the 7.1 µF problem
On the film capacitor side, Kemet's DuraForce Pro 2 line is less talked about than MLCCs but it causes just as many procurement problems. These are AC motor-run capacitors, and a common specification is 7.1 µF (7.1 MFD) with a 370V or 440V AC rating.
The mistake I see is buying 'a 7.1 cap' without verifying the mechanical form. The electrical rating can be correct, but the can size, terminal style, mounting bracket, and continuous-duty rating also matter. In 2023, we received a batch of 1,000 units from a distributor that had the right capacitance but the wrong bracket. The parts would not fit the customer's enclosure without a custom adapter. The rework cost more than six times the value of the capacitors.
DuraForce Pro 2 is not a substitute for a ceramic capacitor. It is a film capacitor designed for AC motor-run duty. If you are writing the spec for one, include the Kemet part number, target capacitance, voltage, can style, and any mechanical constraints. That is the level of detail an authorized distributor needs to quote the right product.
What 'authorized Kemet distributor' actually means
An authorized Kemet distributor has a contract with the manufacturer to sell products under defined terms. That means traceable stock, factory date codes, visibility into changes and discontinuations, and faster support when you need a certificate of compliance. It does not guarantee that every price is the lowest, and it does not guarantee immediate availability. It guarantees that the chain of custody is documented.
The cheapest quote is not the most expensive line on the budget. The most expensive line is a non-conforming batch found after the customer issue.
The counterintuitive part? The lowest quote I once received for Kemet ceramic capacitors was real Kemet product, not a counterfeit. The problem was that the lot had passed through multiple brokers, the date code was too old for the end application, and the seller could not provide a clean chain of custody. We tested the parts and they performed close to spec. 'Close' did not matter; the customer required factory direct traceability.
The authorized distributor's price was $0.04 more per part. On 100,000 parts, that is $4,000 extra. But it bought us audit confidence and let us ship on time. That is what total cost of ownership means in practice.
Checklist before you approve a Kemet distributor quote
- Ask for the quote to show the full Kemet manufacturer part number, not the distributor's internal reference.
- Verify that the distributor is listed as an authorized Kemet distributor—ask for written confirmation if the website is unclear. Kemet's own distributor locator is the better reference.
- Request date code, country of origin, and lot traceability for each batch.
- If the part is a Kemet ceramic capacitor, check dielectric, voltage, tolerance, and case size against the datasheet.
- If the part is a DuraForce Pro 2 film capacitor, verify the exact capacitance (including 7.1 µF), voltage, terminal style, and physical dimensions.
Switches vs Cisco switches: know which one you actually need
One sourcing trap comes up more than expected in RFQs: switches vs Cisco switches. In the component world, a switch is a discrete part—a relay, a tactile switch, a rocker, or a solid-state switching device. In the IT world, a Cisco switch is a network switch: a separate product category with its own supply chain and reseller agreements.
I have seen a purchase order sent to a capacitor distributor with 'switch' in the description, when the buyer actually wanted a Cisco network switch. The distributor quoted a relay. The buyer rejected the quote. Neither side was wrong; they were speaking about different products. If your project needs Kemet ceramic capacitors, a DuraForce Pro 2 motor-run capacitor, and a Cisco switch, treat them as three separate sourcing lines. An authorized Kemet distributor may help with the first two. They will almost certainly not be the right source for the third.
The limit of this advice
'Authorized' is not a magic word. It still makes sense to check lead times, obsolescence notices, and minimum order quantities before you commit. In Q3 2024, one selected high-capacitance MLCC family had lead times past 20 weeks, and our distributor flagged it before we placed the PO. That early signal let engineering redesign to a second source before production launch.
And if this is a personal project or a prototype on your own bench, you can use a broker and likely survive it. For production, safety-related, or audited applications, an authorized Kemet distributor is the difference between a controlled risk and a gamble.
