There's no single answer to 'Where should I buy Kemet components?' I say this after eight years of coordinating rush orders for electronics manufacturers. If someone tells you there is one right supplier, they're probably selling something.
In my role coordinating component sourcing for electronics manufacturers, I spend most days triaging requests. Someone forgot to release the BOM. An approved vendor has a 12-week lead time. Before we start: what do you actually need?
First, make sure you're looking at the right thing. Kemet makes ceramic capacitors, tantalum capacitors, relays, connectors, MLCCs, and film capacitors. 'Kemet relays' are a real product family: signal relays, power relays, and high-frequency relays. But I've seen people ask for 'Kemet relays' when they meant a connector. I've also seen BOM line items like 'Kemet 2780' turn out to be an internal reference, not a manufacturer part number.
I tried to quote a BOM once that listed 'Kemet 2780.' After two days of calls, it turned out the design engineer meant a 100nF MLCC with a specific voltage rating. If you're not sure, ask for the full manufacturer part number and the datasheet.
How to choose the right Kemet authorized distributor
Kemet's own website lists authorized distributors by region, and that list is the starting point. In North America, names like Arrow, Avnet, DigiKey, Mouser, and TTI typically appear on it. This was accurate as of January 2025. Authorized distribution matters because it gives you traceability, warranty support, and access to official documentation. Without authorization, a distributor can still carry used or grey-market stock—especially for high-demand parts like certain Kemet tantalum capacitors.
But 'authorized' isn't a magic word. Authorized distributors have different inventory depths, regional coverage, and service levels. One might have the part in stock for next-day delivery; another might quote a longer lead time but offer better payment terms. Don't assume the biggest name is the fastest. Check stock online, then call.
Scenario A: The production line is down
If a line is waiting for Kemet relays, the clock matters more than the price. Ninety minutes of downtime can cost more than the entire order's part value. In March 2024, I had a customer with a telecom module due in 36 hours and no stock of a specific Kemet relay. Normal lead time: eight weeks. We found an authorized distributor with inventory on the East Coast, paid an expedite fee, and had the parts delivered next morning. The customer's alternative was a broker offering 'same spec' relays with no date code data.
When I'm triaging a rush order, I tell people to forget unit price. Ask three questions instead:
- Do you physically have the part in stock?

Those symbols are often required by standards like IEC 60601-1, and they're part of your regulatory submission. This is where quality perception becomes tangible. The capacitor or relay next to that symbol matters just as much as the symbol itself. If a patient sees a low-battery icon and the device resets ten minutes later, the brand loses trust. I've seen a field failure caused by a counterfeit ceramic capacitor that looked identical to a Kemet MLCC. The customer switched to authorized Kemet parts, and the failure rate dropped to near zero. I don't have hard data on grey-market failure rates across the industry, but based on our returns, it's real.
To be fair, not every medical PCB needs a premium component. Some applications don't need a $1 capacitor where a $0.10 one works. But if your device has to meet safety standards, save test-and-approval pain by using traceable parts.
Scenario C: Prototype, breadboard, or one-off
Here's the contrarian part: if you're building a prototype and need a Kemet capacitor today, you don't necessarily need an authorized distributor. A local electronics shop or a non-authorized online seller can be faster and cheaper. I've learned this the hard way. Everything I'd read said 'always buy authorized,' but in practice, a small shop that lets you walk in and buy a handful of parts can keep your development schedule alive.
The catch is knowing where that boundary is. Use the prototype source only for engineering evaluation, not production. Date codes can be old. Parts might come from a different lot. If the prototype behaves oddly, you don't know whether it's the part or the design. For proving a concept, that's often an acceptable trade-off.
My rule: if the board goes into a human or a customer, buy authorized. If it's on your bench and you need it by Friday, use whatever works—and note in the BOM that the final build should use an authorized source.
Scenario D: Long-term production and lead-time planning
For production orders, the goal is to avoid emergency purchases. This is where 'Kemet authorized distributors' matters most. Set up an account with at least two authorized distributors, get access to their portal or API, and monitor stock for critical parts. In my experience, supply-chain teams that only call when something goes wrong are the ones that get left waiting when a part goes into allocation.
It took me about six years and 200 rush orders to understand that relationships beat transactions. A distributor who knows your forecast will help you when a part becomes hard to get. A distributor who only sees quote requests with no follow-up probably won't.
One common mistake: comparing distributors the same way you might compare infrastructure providers, like the 'Crown Castle vs American Tower' analysis. You look at coverage maps and annual reports. With component distribution, coverage isn't the main metric. What matters is authorization, inventory, and responsiveness. A smaller regional authorized distributor can be better than a global giant if they carry the Kemet line and answer the phone.
How to decide which scenario you're in
Still not sure? Run through this test:
- If a line is down or a customer deadline is less than five business days away, go to Scenario A.
- If the end product touches a patient or is legally regulated, go to Scenario B.
- If you're testing, prototyping, or making a one-off for your desk, go to Scenario C.
- If you're planning normal production, go to Scenario D.
And if someone asks for a 'Kemet 2780' or any part number they can't fully specify, stop. Ask for the manufacturer's datasheet and full part number. It will save everyone a lot of time.
Final thought
Quality is a reflection of the person who made the buying decision. When the engineering manager opens a board and sees a Kemet logo from an authorized distributor, that's one less thing to worry about. When the customer opens a blood pressure monitor and sees a clear, standardized interface, that's one less thing to worry about too. Buy like your brand depends on it—because it does.
