Kemet Ceramic Capacitors: A 6-Step Verification Checklist (CAGE Code, Multimeter, and Supply Chain Checks)

I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at an electronic components distributor. I review every product line before it reaches customers—roughly 200 unique part numbers a year. In Q1 2024, we rejected 2.4% of first deliveries because documentation didn't match the material. This is the checklist I use when a purchase order says KEMET.

What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025. The fundamentals haven't changed, but the execution has. Here is a 6-step checklist to verify Kemet ceramic capacitors, check a Kemet CAGE code, and avoid the common traps I see in the supply chain.

1. Start with the Kemet CAGE Code, not the logo

KEMET Corporation is part of Yageo Group, but the legal entity you need for traceability is usually KEMET Electronics Corporation. In US federal and defense contracts, that legal entity has a CAGE code. A CAGE code is a five-character identifier registered in SAM.gov. It is not a product code, and it's not a vendor's internal '7.1' code. If anyone sends you a CAGE code that doesn't have five characters, stop and verify.

As of January 2025, you can look up the current KEMET CAGE code by searching the legal entity name on SAM.gov. Check the SAM registration expiration date too, not just the code. I'm not a compliance lawyer, so I won't speak to FAR/DFARS requirements beyond one point: use the official registry, not a screenshot from a supplier portal.

2. Confirm the Kemet part number is real

Kemet ceramic capacitors use a structured part number format. An example is C0805C104K5RACTU. Each block tells you the size, capacitance, tolerance, voltage, dielectric, termination, and packaging. If you don't know the format, use KEMET's official part number decoder or the datasheet. A part number can look perfect at first glance and still be wrong.

This is where grey-market shipments slip through. I once rejected a batch of 10,000 capacitors because the suffix was slightly off—it indicated a different packaging option than our contract. The supplier claimed it was 'within industry standard.' It wasn't. Check every character, because one wrong letter can change the termination or the reel size.

3. Verify the supply chain: authorized distributor and CoC

From the outside, a reel with the KEMET logo looks fine. The reality is that counterfeit and grey-market components often copy logos exactly. The only way to reduce risk is to buy from authorized distribution or direct from KEMET, and ask for a Certificate of Conformance (CoC).

In Q3 2024, I ran a blind check on four vendors offering the same Kemet ceramic capacitor. Two had no CoC, and one had a mismatched CAGE code. We didn't argue—we crossed them off the list. No CoC is a red flag, even if the price is tempting.

Authorized distributors also receive product change notifications and obsolescence updates. If your supplier can't tell you whether KEMET changed a material or a process, they're not really in the channel.

4. Use a multimeter to check capacitance (and know its limits)

Now, the 'best multimeter' question. A basic multimeter with a capacitance mode can get you in the ballpark. For Kemet ceramic capacitors, though, you want a meter that can handle the capacitor's range and read at pF resolution if you're checking small values. In many cases, a dedicated LCR meter is the better tool.

Here's a practical procedure:

  • Discharge the capacitor before testing. Yes, even ceramic caps—do it anyway.
  • Set the multimeter to capacitance mode. Use the correct measurement frequency if the meter allows (1 kHz for many ceramics; check the datasheet).
  • Read the value and compare it to tolerance. A 100 nF 0805 capacitor should read between 90 nF and 110 nF for a ±10% part. If it reads far outside that, or the value drifts, reject it.
  • If the capacitor is in-circuit, remove it from the board. Measuring in-circuit gives misleading readings.
  • Use relative mode to subtract the test probe capacitance when you're measuring values in the low pF range.

The best multimeter for this job is the one with the right range for the parts you're checking. It doesn't need a million features. It needs to be stable and repeatable. The same tool should also be able to show open or short conditions, because a ceramic capacitor can fail as a short and still show something on a cheap meter.

5. Inspect the physical packaging and labels

Kemet ceramic capacitors are typically unmarked because of their small size. So the reel label, date code, and lot number are your only physical evidence. Check the label against the purchase order. Check the date code range for consistency. If you can, photograph the label with your phone or a USB microscope.

In our Q1 2024 audit, we found one reel where the label said 10 µF but the internal lot record said 100 nF. That's exactly the kind of mismatch that causes a field failure months later. The people on the line usually aren't trying to cheat—they're just moving fast. That's why the check matters.

Date codes for KEMET parts are typically four digits in a YYWW format. A reel doesn't expire just because it's a few years old, but reconditioned packaging and inconsistent date codes are warning signs.

6. Document the evidence for traceability

This is the step most people skip. They test a sample, the values look good, and then they toss the results. Don't do that.

Record the full KEMET part number, the lot number, the date code, the CAGE code from the CoC, and the measured values. Store a photo of the reel label. This documentation isn't just paperwork—it's what lets you trace a failure back to a specific lot before the whole BOM gets recalled.

In 2025, more customers are asking for lot traceability before they issue a PO. If you can't produce the evidence after the order, you've already lost the next order.

Common mistakes to avoid

Don't trust a cheap multimeter's capacitance reading as absolute truth. Use it as a screening tool, not a final judgment. If the value is borderline, run the capacitor on an LCR meter before you release it.

Don't confuse KEMET Corporation with 'Kemet' the ancient Egyptian term. It sounds silly, but search engines and supplier portals mix them up. In this industry, KEMET means KEMET Electronics Corporation.

Don't accept a CAGE code without verifying it. Valid CAGE codes are five characters. A field that says '7.1' is not a valid CAGE code—it's a database display problem. Use SAM.gov.

Bottom line: the fundamentals haven't changed. Know your supplier, know your part number, and prove it with data. But the execution in 2025 should look different from 2020—more formal traceability, more authorized distribution, and better test tools. A multimeter with the right range is cheap insurance, and it's easier to find today than it was five years ago.
